Happy Vacation

Since we all have different beliefs, I decided to try to stay out of controversy by just wishing everyone well as we head off for vacation time.  Only five days this week, and then we're done!  There's much to do in those five days, but I have confidence we can accomplish it all.

Last week we continued the Battle of Technology, so 2nd Hour English 9 is behind on their slideshows for Stranger Things "Episode 1," and I'm adjusting their deadline to this Wednesday.  English 10 is working on interviews and since Google Hangouts is blocked we've been working our way around this, looking for alternatives.  A few people have been able to accomplish them so far, and if any groups need time during class to go do an interview I'll make time for that.  After they do the interview they will need to type up the conversation so that we have a written record.  In case we can't actually make an interview happen I had them type up the contact information, the email they are sending, and the questions they plan to ask, and then they shared this with me so that they can get credit.

So here's the plan for this week:

English 9

  • Monday, 12/17 - 2nd Hour = prepositions; finish "Cask of Amontillado" worksheet; 5th Hour = finish "Cask of Amontillado" worksheet
  • Tuesday, 12/18 - Academic Advisory - 2nd Hour = quiz for "Cask"; work on slideshow; 5th Hour = prepositions; quiz for "Cask"
  • Wednesday, 12/19 - 2nd Hour = silent reading and/or slideshow which is due by midnight; 5th Hour = silent reading
  • Thursday, 12/20 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in Reading Log #12; Episode 2 of Stranger Things (as requested)
  • Friday, 12/21 - game and treat day
English 10
  • Monday, 12/17 - read Ch. 28 of HeLa; study guide, notes, type 2 exit ticket
  • Tuesday, 12/18 - Academic Advisory - Ch. 29/30 of HeLa; study guide and notes
  • Wednesday, 12/19 - Ch. 31 of HeLa; study guide and notes
  • Thursday, 12/20 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - Ch. 32 of HeLa; study guide and notes
  • Friday, 12/21 - test for pp. 199-267
As a side note, for English 10 parents especially - my 1st Hour pranked me on Friday, and they got me good.  I guess they planned it right in front of me (not enough coffee in me yet?).  I'm posting the pictures they wanted down below, but there will not be any paybacks from me since I don't want to escalate things.  One prank directed my way in 25 years is plenty, thank you very much, so I also want to discourage any other classes from trying their hands at this; if you hear anything, I'd appreciate your help in squashing it.  It's too difficult to do my job if I'm having to cope with the pranks as well.

Thanks!

Two Weeks to Break!

I swear this season is joyful and maddening all at the same time.  I think I have three obligations every day all the way through January 1st.  I struggle because I feel guilty if I'm not keeping up with my grading for school, but I think it's really important to be fully present at the events I'm attending, giving the people performing, visiting, and conversing my full attention.  If there's one thing, I know, however, it will all get done.  Today I plan to get as much grading done as I can before I have to leave at 4:30 to drive my son to his evening events and then go work my shift in a charity poker room earning much needed money for the Pioneer Theater Guild.  That's an adventure and story in itself.  I worked a 6-hour shift Friday and learned about a whole new world out there that I never knew existed! I've never gambled and I'm not a card player, so this was all new to me.

Anyway, we're cruising along in both of my classes, so here's what we accomplished last week: despite the technology issues English 9 was able to watch Episode 1 of Stranger Things and we dissected it for literary elements.  It was a lot of fun, and now we all wish we could just sit and binge watch the rest of the season during English class (I told them no).  In English 10 we have now read through Chapter 23 of Henrietta Lacks and only have a couple of presentations to go.  They broke into pairs and grabbed a chapter to teach and then gave quizzes to the class.  It's been an adventure - some presentations were just ho-hum, but many of your students did a fabulous job!  On Friday we encountered technology issues as we tried to set up and prepare for interviews with people who work in the field of their Passion Project topic.  I'm trying to do three things: utilize technology like Hangouts (it's like Skype), practice email and face-to-face communication skills with people who are not our friends, and get them motivated for using English skills by working with topics of their own choosing.  We'll see how this goes.  This is the portion of the project that has caused me to bite off all my fingernails (literally).

So what's coming up this week?

English 9

  • Monday, 12/10 - work on Slide Show for Stranger Things on Google Classroom.
  • Tuesday, 12/11 - Academic Advisory - finish work on Slide Show - due by midnight; if time - prepositions.
  • Wednesday, 12/12 - prepositions; introduction of Edgar Allan Poe; start "The Cask of Amontillado"
  • Thursday, 12/13 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in Reading Log #10; prepositions; continue "The Cask of Amontillado"
  • Friday, 12/14 - get Reading Log #12; silent reading day
English 10
  • Monday, 12/10 - Type 1; read Chapter 24 of HeLa - study guide and vocab.
  • Tuesday, 12/11 - Academic Advisory - Type 1; turn in study guide and vocab.; assessment for pp. 137-98 of HeLa
  • Wednesday, 12/12 - Type 1; read Chapter 25 of HeLa - study guide, notes
  • Thursday, 12/13 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - Type 1-turn in for week; Chapter 26 and 27 presentations and quizzes.
  • Friday, 12/14 - Passion Projects - interviews
So that's the plan.  I hope everyone has a great week!

Patience is a Virtue

Last week tested the old cliché because between technology viruses and gas leaks, it felt much of the time like I couldn't get anything done.  Seriously; I was working late on Thursday trying to catch up and was really making progress when we got evacuated.  But if there's one thing I am becoming a master at, it's being flexible, so we made it through.  In English 9 we managed to complete and submit our first major analytical essay, and in English 10 we tested over the first third of the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

In addition to this, English 9 students received the information for scheduling for 10th grade and we went over it all in class.  On Friday the counselors will be coming to my class to schedule them - that means all signatures need to be on the paperwork so that they can be turned in.

So what's coming up this week?

English 9

  • Monday, 12/3 - finish literary term definitions; watch Stranger Things episode 1.
  • Tuesday, 12/4 - Academic Advisory - prepositions; Stranger Things episode 1; take notes; create slide show
  • Wednesday, 12/5 - 1/2 Day (release at 10:30) - work on notes and slide show
  • Thursday, 12/6 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in reading log; prepositions; work on slide show
  • Friday, 12/7 - schedule for 10th grade (paperwork is due); get new reading log; silent reading day
English 10
  • Monday, 12/3 - Type 1; check in notes from pp. 1-136; presentations for ch. 18, 19, 20
  • Tuesday, 12/4 - Academic Advisory - Type 1; ch. 21 with new notes, study guide, vocab.
  • Wednesday, 12/5 - 1/2 Day (release at 10:30) - presentation for ch. 22
  • Thursday, 12/6 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - Type 1 - turn in for week; ch. 24, 25
  • Friday, 12/7 - Passion Project - Interviews
This is where things stand as of Sunday morning.  If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Have a great week!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break.  My time was busy, but well spent, with family and friends.  I'm also feeling revived and ready to go for the next stretch until the next holiday break in four weeks. We have a lot to accomplish, and though it feels like we have lots of time to do it, I know that in the end it will feel rushed, so I'm ready to get at it.

Right before break, English 9 was working on an essay for Romeo and Juliet, and we're now in the process of typing it.  They will have time to work on this in class on Monday, but it will come due on Tuesday and be worth 50 points. In English 10 we're in the middle of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and they'll have their first real assessment for the book on Thursday.  So here's the plan:

English 9

  • Monday, 11/26 - work time to type essay.
  • Tuesday, 11/27 - Academic Advisory - edit, revise and submit essay through Google Classroom.
  • Wednesday, 11/28 - prepositions; Stranger Things activity for learning about literary terms.
  • Thursday, 11/29 - Scheduling Advisory (for 10th grade) - prepositions; Stranger Things activity.
  • Friday, 11/30 - silent reading day; get new reading log.
English 10
  • Monday, 11/26 - Type 1 (SAT); Chapter 13 of HeLa
  • Tuesday, 11/27 - Academic Advisory - Type 1 (SAT); Chapter 14, 15, 16 presentations and quizzes
  • Wednesday, 11/28 - Type 1 (SAT); Chapter 17 of HeLa; finish study guide and vocab. and turn in.
  • Thursday, 11/29 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - Type 1 (SAT) and turn in; assessment for HeLa (first 1/3 of the book); Chapter 18, 19 presentations
  • Friday, 11/30 - Passion Project - planning for and setting up for an interview
That's what I have for this week.  FYI, if your student is interested in traveling to Italy with me in 2020 there is a parent meeting in the Media Center on Wednesday, 11/28 at 6:00.  It's purely informational, but it will help me to determine if we have enough interest to take it to the Board.

Have a great week!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The holidays are here!  I hope everyone has a wonderful season full of love, family, and laughter.  Since it's such a short week, this is going to be very short.

Monday from 3:00 to 6:00 are parent teacher conferences.  They're in the gym and cafeteria at the high school, and it's arena style - no appointments needed, but you might have to wait in line.  I sent out emails to those with whom I have the greatest concern in my class.

English 9

  • Monday, 11/19 - we will finish drafting out the information for the Romeo and Juliet essay; then we'll type it in using Google Classroom as our platform.
  • Tuesday, 11/20 - half day - no advisory.  We'll just finish up whatever still needs to be finished.
English 10
  • Monday, 11/19 - groups will be presenting chapters 9, 10, 11, 12 - quizzes for all chapters.
  • Tuesday, 11/20 - half day - no advisory.  We'll finish up whatever still needs to be finished.
And that's all I have planned.  May everyone have a great rest of the weekend, and a fabulous short week!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

On to Term Two

I have so much to do that this is going to be short and sweet.  First, 1st Term is now over and I'm working on grades - they're not due for a couple of days yet, so your patience is appreciated.  Second, parent teacher conferences are coming up for the afternoon of Monday, 11/19 from 3:00 to 6:00 at the high school.  I'll be emailing anyone I'm concerned about, but anyone is welcome.  If you can't make it to conferences, feel free to call or email.

Last week English 9 finished reading Romeo and Juliet, so this week is all about assessment. English 10 started reading The Immortal Life of  Henrietta Lacks; this entails a lot of independent reading on their part, so if they say they have no homework, that's probably false.

Here's the plan for this week:

English 9

  • Monday, 11/12 - watch the movie of Romeo and Juliet
  • Tuesday, 11/13 - Academic Advisory -  finish the movie; short Romeo and Juliet test - matching/true-false/multiple choice
  • Wednesday, 11/14 - write the draft of the body of the essay
  • Thursday, 11/15 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - write the introduction/conclusion of the essay
  • Friday, 11/16 - type up and submit the essay on Google Classroom
English 10
  • Monday, 11/12 - read chapters 4-7 in HeLa for Tuesday; find, read, and annotate a short story related to Passion Project topic for Friday
  • Tuesday, 11/13 - Academic Advisory - type 1; quiz for ch. 4-7; read ch. 8
  • Wednesday, 11/14 - type 1; read ch. 9-11 independently
  • Thursday, 11/15 - PSAT/SAT Advisory (new rotation) - type 1 - turn in for week; quiz for ch. 9-11; read ch. 12, 13, 14
  • Friday, 11/16 - reach ch. 15-16 in HeLa for Monday; work on short story for Passion Project
I'm a little ambitious on the timeline for the Romeo and Juliet essay, so those dates might get changed, but I'll update the calendar to reflect it.  I hope everyone has a great week!

And...NOW it's the Last Week of Term 2!

I am losing my mind; it's official.  I guess because my own two children just finished their first term, I just combined everything to include Airport, too.  This coming week is the last week of Term 1 and I'm so relieved because I was in serious panic-mode trying to figure out how to get everything graded, stay coherent through this ridiculously awful cold, and do my mom duties.  It will all work out, however, as it always does.

We have a couple of special events coming up:  the volleyball team is going to regionals in Milan on Tuesday, and I have a couple of players in my classes, so I plan to try to make at least some of the game.  It's at 7:00, or so I hear.  Also, there is a Veterans Day assembly at 1:30 at Airport High School in the gym on Friday.  Ninth graders should wear red; 10th graders should wear white.

In the meantime, we continue on with our curriculum.  English 9 finished through Act III of Romeo and Juliet; my goal is to finish the play this week.  English 10 is done with Animal Farm and we've moved forward with our passion project, looking at poems that connect to their topics.  This week they'll start reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which is a really great non-fiction book that deals with racism, classism, sexism, and medical ethics.  UofM College of Engineering used it as their one book/one community read this last summer and gave a copy to all incoming engineering students.  It's not a difficult read, but it's definitely an interesting one.  I'm really excited to start it.

So here's the schedule for this week:

English 9

  • Monday, 11/5 - prepositions; Act IV of Romeo and Juliet
  • Tuesday, 11/6 - Academic Advisory - finish Act IV and take a quiz.
  • Wednesday, 11/7 - prepositions; Act V of Romeo and Juliet
  • Thursday, 11/8 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in reading log #8; finish Act V and take a quiz
  • Friday, 11/9 - finish anything for Romeo and Juliet reading or quizzes; get reading log #9; silent reading day.
English 10
  • Monday, 11/5 - turn in Verb Packet #4; bell work - type 1; finish discussing Poetry Slides; HeLa preview packet
  • Tuesday, 11/6 - Academic Advisory - bell work - type 1; finish HeLa preview; read pp. 1-7 - study guide annotations, vocabulary packet
  • Wednesday, 11/7 - bell work - type 1; independently read and annotate pp. 8-26 - Quiz Thursday over the reading
  • Thursday, 11/8 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - bell work - type 1 - turn in for the week; a quiz for pp. 8-26; read pp. 27-33 - study guide, vocabulary, annotations
  • Friday, 11/9 - add poem entries to Works Cited Document and share ideas with the group; discuss short story elements and structure; find a short story; add to Works Cited Document; read and annotate for next week.
There's the plan.  I hope everyone has a great week!

Final Week of Term One

I'm buried in papers and projects to grade, but I've spent much of my weekend, and I will be spending the rest of what's left, digging my way out.  My challenge this year is alternating between grading actual paper to grading online.  I'm getting used to it, but time is an issue with the online grading because I'm so slow!

This past week was fun for me.  Both English 9 and English 10 made videos for a system we're using called Flipgrid.  Of course, in my mind this would only take one, maybe two days, and in reality it took more like four.  Then we had tech issues on Friday so we had trouble watching them, but c'est la vie.  Here are some pictures of them working through the planning and filming stages:

It was fun to watch the creativity your kids can put into their work and the videos are great!  This one was one of my favorites, and since they chose to put it out there publicly, I'm sure they won't mind me sharing.  You have to click on the link to see it:

Romeo and Juliet Act III Scene i

This week we'll be moving forward - English 10 will finish Animal Farm and English 9 will work to try to get Acts III and IV hammered out so that we can finish the play the next week.  Here's the plan:

English 9

  • Monday, 10/29 - 2nd Hour will continue Act III; 5th Hour has silent reading and/or reading Act III, scenes 2/3 on their own and filling in the study guide.
  • Tuesday, 10/30 - Academic Advisory - finish Act III of Romeo and Juliet
  • Wednesday, 10/31 - quiz for Act III; continue into Act IV
  • Thursday, 11/1 - no school (Teacher Inservice)
  • Friday, 11/2 - turn in Reading Log #7; get Reading Log #8; finish Act IV
English 10
  • Monday, 10/29 - watch Animal Farm
  • Tuesday, 10/30 - Academic Advisory - continue watching Animal Farm
  • Wednesday, 10/31 - finish watching Animal Farm; go over slideshow due Friday.
  • Thursday, 11/1 - no school (Teacher Inservice)
  • Friday, 11/2 - finish group slideshow for poetry; start looking for a short story that connects to the Passion Project topic
That's the plan.  If anyone needs anything, please feel free to contact me.  Have a great week!

Senior Moments

Senior moments. No, I'm not having one (though sometimes I wonder). My eldest son is a senior in high school and all the "lasts" have begun: last orientation, last first day of school, last set of arena style conferences in the gym with 2000 other parents. Friday night was Senior Night for the band (following Thursday night's last Halloween concert), and I think I did pretty well and didn't get too emotional. Here's the picture of us on the field being announced:

I didn't get emotional until the end of the night, after they marched back to the school and pulled the seniors forward for a final roll call ("Band, how do you feel?  We feel good, oh we feel so good! Who's got the best band? Ann Arbor!  Which Ann Arbor? Pioneer! I can't hear you! Pioneer!")  I am sad that I'll never watch my kid participate in this fun tradition again.  I just keep reminding myself that after all these lasts, the firsts will begin again, and that gets me through.

Anyway, back to your kids!  We had a busy week last week, and of course by the end of the week, I was behind on my goal for the schedule.  In English 9 last week we finished Romeo and Juliet Act II and took a quiz; in English 10 we finished reading Animal Farm and took another quiz, then we completed and (they should have) submitted the final copy of their research paper.

Here's what's coming up this week:

English 9
  • Monday, 10/22 - hand back papers; Act III, Scene i; Flipgrid Assignment
  • Tuesday, 10/23 - Academic Advisory - prepositions; finish Flipgrid Assignment
  • Wednesday, 10/24 - prepositions; watch Flipgrid videos; continue Act III
  • Thursday, 10/25 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in RL#6; continue Act III
  • Friday, 10/26 - get RL #7; if needed, finish Act III; silent reading
English 10
  • Monday, 10/22 - hand back papers; discuss poetry terminology and annotating poems; quiz for Chapter 9/10; finish study guide packet - due Tuesday; finish Propaganda Assignment - due Tuesday
  • Tuesday, 10/23 - Academic Advisory - verbs; Flipgrid assignment
  • Wednesday, 10/24 - verbs; Flipgrid assignment (4th Hour Fire Drill - 10:50)
  • Thursday, 10/25 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - verbs; Flipgrid assignment
  • Friday, 10/26 - Passion Project - poetry - create group slideshow with annotated poems - presentations 11/2
There's the plan.  I hope everyone has a good week!

October Colors are Here

I love October.  I know the weather goes up and down, but the cool nights and the leaves changing color just warms my heart.  When I'm stressed out, I like to go take a walk at this time of year, both because the temperature works so well for walking and because the scenery is beautiful.  I just wish I could get out into it more often.

It's a busy time of year for me both professionally and personally, so we're working hard at this point. Let me just say, however, how much I love my students.  They are funny, vivacious, and they definitely keep me on my toes.  We're entering that point in the term, however, where they need a little bit of a kick in the pants to stay with it academically, so I hope everyone is checking HAC often.  With only three weeks to go in the term, everyone needs to stay on top of everything.

In English 9 last week, we finished Act I of Romeo and Juliet and took the first quiz.  Then we started Act II.  This coming week we should be able to finish Act II and play around with the text and have fun with it a bit.  In English 10 we've now read through Chapter 7 of Animal Farm (there are 10 chapters) and taken quizzes.  We're also writing a small research paper, and the rough drafts were due by midnight on Friday.  Final copies will come due this week.

Here's the schedule:

English 9

  • Monday, 10/15 - pass back papers; continue Romeo and Juliet Act II
  • Tuesday, 10/16 - Academic Advisory - prepositions; continue R&J Act II
  • Wednesday, 10/17 - prepositions; finish R&J Act II; Quiz for Act II
  • Thursday, 10/18 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - turn in Reading Log #5;  read R&J Act III, scene i; Flipgrid assignment - acting out a scene
  • Friday, 10/19 - get reading log #6; finish Flipgrid videos; silent reading day
English 10
  • Monday, 10/15 - pass back papers; deal with rough drafts and how to edit/revise them - final copy due Friday by midnight; discuss ch. 7 of Animal Farm; read ch. 8
  • Tuesday, 10/16 - Academic Advisory - verbs; discuss Ch. 8; quiz for ch. 7/8 of AF
  • Wednesday, 10/17 - verbs; read ch. 9/10 of AF
  • Thursday, 10/18 - PSAT/SAT Advisory - discuss ch. 9/10; quiz for 9/10; start Character/Theme Analysis Project
  • Friday, 10/19 - final copy of research paper is due by midnight; go find 2-3 poems that connect to the topic and do Google Slide assignment on Google Classroom
So that's the plan.  I hope everyone has a great week!

October Weather is Here!

Don't you just love October and the weather changes it brings?  Rain, hail, snow, 80 degrees, all in one day it seems.  Right now it's raining up here in Ypsilanti, but I have heard rumor that you have hail down in Carleton.  Hopefully everyone is staying dry and safe on this crazy Saturday of storms.

Speaking of storms, academic reality hit for many students last week.  The honeymoon period of school is over, and we're now down to regular schedules with lots of academic work.  Even our advisories got serious, and I know my 10th grade advisory was stuck with the mean me as I cracked down so that people could use the academic advisory to get work done (and get help), and then Thursday I started them on the road to writing an SAT essay.  In my regular classes, English 9 finished Act I of Romeo and Juliet, and English 10 is halfway through Animal Farm and is now writing a research paper for the Passion Project.

Here's the schedule for this week:

English 9

  • Monday, 10/8 - finish Romeo and Juliet Act I packet and turn in; create notes for Act I on Google Keep - to be checked in at a future date.
  • Tuesday, 10/9 - Academic Advisory - prepositions; quiz for Act I; begin Act II, scene i
  • Wednesday, 10/10 - vocab. Packet for Act II; watch Act I and Act II, scene i of the movie
  • Thursday, 10/11 - PSAT Advisory - turn in Reading Log #4; prepositions; go over vocab.; continue Act II
  • Friday, 10/12 - get Reading Log #5; silent reading day
English 10
  • Monday, 10/8 - finish discussing the writing of the rough draft of the research paper; Google Classroom Quizizz; character chart; vocab. for Chapters 4-6
  • Tuesday, 10/9 - Academic Advisory - verbs; read Chapter 6
  • Wednesday, 10/10 - quiz for Chapters 5-6; vocab. cards for Chapters 7-8
  • Thursday, 10/11 - PSAT Advisory - verbs; go over vocab. as needed; read Chapter 7
  • Friday, 10/12 - rough drafts are due at Midnight; make a copy of the Works Cited; connect Animal Farm to the Passion Project topic
That's my plan for the week.  I hope everyone has a relaxing rest of the weekend, and a fantastic week!

The Post-Homecoming Blues

Good morning!  I hope all of your kids had a fantastic Homecoming Week.  It's chaotic, it's crazy, and it's lots of fun, so even if they didn't go to the dance, I hope they found something they liked about it.  I took lots of pictures this week, so I'll post them at the bottom of this blog and wish you all happy hunting.

The bummer part of the whole thing is that we now get serious about everything, and they're all tired and sad that the fun is over (for the time being).  We did do serious things last week like reading the texts of Romeo and Juliet and Animal Farm, taking quizzes, and working on research. It's kind of  amazing considering how much of the week was also spent on decorating hallways, pep rallies, dressing up, taking pictures.  This week, however, we should really be able to concentrate on the serious business of academics, so I anticipate getting even more done.  Here's the schedule as I see it:

English 9

  • Monday, 10/1 - prepositions; watch scene i of R&J; read scene ii; homework - packet
